Kemas

Kemas Centres were created by the Ministry of Education to provide preschool programmes for young children from all communities aged between 4-5 years. Teachers from Kemas Centres train with the Community Development Division (Kemas) of the National Unity Department. The curriculum guidelines set by the Ministry of Education, aim to enable preschool childen to acquire basic communication, social and other positive skills in preparation for primary schooling.

Social, intellectual, physical, spiritual skills and aesthetic values are the focus of Kemas Centre teachings. The programme runs for a duration of 1 to 2 years and are offered throughout the country in both urban and rural areas. The fees charged by these preschools vary and are largely determined by overhead costs and market forces. Preschool classes conducted by the MOE and other government agencies enable under-privileged children to preschool education for free or at a minimal charge. Priority for admission to these classes is given to those who cannot otherwise afford to attend preschool.
